چکیده

Far-field high-energy X-ray diffraction microscopy is used to asses the evolution of slip system strengths in hexagonal close-packed (HCP) Ti-7Al during tensile deformation in-situ. The following HCP slip system families are considered: basal 〈a〉, prismatic 〈a〉, pyramidal 〈a〉, and first-order pyramidal 〈cþ a〉. A 1 mm length of the specimen's gauge section, marked with fiducials and comprised of an aggregate of over 500 grains, is tracked during continuous deformation. The response of each slip system family is quantified using ‘slip system strength curves’ that are calculated from the average stress tensors of each grain over the applied deformation history. These curves, which plot the average resolved shear stress for each slip system family versus macroscopic strain, represent a mesoscopic characterization of the aggregate response. A short time-scale transient softening is observed in the basal 〈a〉, prismatic 〈a〉, and pyramidal 〈a〉 slip systems, while a long time-scale transient hardening is observed in the pyramidal 〈cþ a〉 slip systems. These results are used to develop a slip system strength model as part of an elasto-viscoplastic constitutive model for the single crystal behavior. A suite of finite element simulations is performed on a virtual polycrystal to demonstrate the relative effects of the different parameters in the slip system strength model. The model is shown to accurately capture the macroscopic stress-strain response using parameters that are chosen to capture the mesoscopic slip system responses. © 2017 Acta Materialia Inc. In-situ stress regime in the Asmari reservoir of the Zeloi and Lali oil fields, northwest of the Dezful embayment in Zagros fold-thrust belt, Iran

This paper analyzes in-situ stress field in the Asmari formation with in the complex structures of the Zeloi and Lali oilfields located in the Dezful embayment, SW Iran. The orientation of the maximum horizontal stress, SHmax is determined on the basis of compressive borehole breakouts and drilling-induced tensile fractures observed in eight oil wells, in which we focus on well-log based method...

Laboratory hot torsion testing technique was carried out on one plain low carbon steel and two plain low carbon Nb and Nb-Ti micro alloyed steels to study the effects of chemical composition, micro alloying addition, on the dynamic softening and grain refinement of ferrite during warm deformation. Deformation schedule was conducted within two phase region (i.e. between Ar3-Ar1). The physical pr...

Plastic deformation of freestanding thin films: Experiments and modeling

Experimental measurements and computational results for the evolution of plastic deformation in freestanding thin films are compared. In the experiments, the stress–strain response of two sets of Cu films is determined in the plane-strain bulge test. One set of samples consists of electroplated Cu films, while the other set is sputter-deposited. Unpassivated films, films passivated on one side ...

Coupled crystal orientation-size effects on the strength of nano crystals

We study the combined effects of grain size and texture on the strength of nanocrystalline copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) using a crystal-plasticity based mechanics model. Within the model, slip occurs in discrete slip events exclusively by individual dislocations emitted statistically from the grain boundaries. We show that a Hall-Petch relationship emerges in both initially texture and non-textu...

Detailed Microstructural Evolutions of TWIP Steel During Tensile Straining: In situ SEM Observations

Microstructural evolutions of twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) steel during tensile straining were investigated by in situ SEM observations. The results indicated that slip lines and mechanical twins as well as surface relief were increased with increasing strain, resulting in a stepped surface. Additionally, these deformation mechanisms could change the shape of each grain via shear and rota...
